The much anticipated ORCA Mini Cup got underway with the opening race of the 7 round winterseries taking place last Sunday (24 October) in Summerhill where last winter's most winning driver Oisin O'Briain took victory.  The Tamiya Mini advocate was hard pushed for the win with two Mini newcomers mounting very strong challenges.  Have TQ'd the first five rounds of qualifying Oisin opted to sit out the sixth & final qualifier only for Jacek Zadronzy to set a new fastest time around the technical track giving the Mini debutant pole for the final.

Having only qualified fourth Eoin McGeough destroyed the field in the opening Leg of the final lapping everyone to take a domintant win over Oisin and regular Mini competitor David O'Sullivan.  The later was responsible for Eoin's new found speed having advised the Mini rookie on how to prep his tyres with a certain well known brand of lubricating oil!!  Unfortunately Eoin was unable to repeat his performance in Leg 2 retiring after just 3 laps with broken steering on his M03 chassis.  Starting from second on the grid, Oisin got the jump on the Top Qualifier off the line to lead the race from start to finish to claim the overall win ahead of Jacek.  Claiming third in Leg 2, ahead of the youngest competitor 11 year-old Sean Burke, Pawel Borkowski completed the overall podium for the opening round.  Although very quick Mick Byrne didn't have a good day failing to finish any of his runs but the winner of the final round of the 1:8 Onroad Nationals gave the Mini Cup a big thumbs up saying the front wheel drive car was really fun to drive. Finishing the day with a fun knock-out single lap shot out challenge the last two drivers remaining were Jacek and Pawel with Pawel getting the better of his friend for the win.  Interested in r/c drifting, Pawel's first race event seems to have converted him to racing and he should be one to watch over the remainder of the championship.  Round 2 of the ORCA Mini Cup takes place November 21st.
